Crystal Palace Transfer Tracker: Benteke & Cabaye out, Wilshere & Livermore in - what the papers are saying

Written by FYP Fanzine

Ah June, the month when transfer rumours start to hot up and everyone starts melting down over names that are missed out on. Don't you just love silly season?

The pesky World Cup may well be getting all the limelight at the moment but that hasn't stopped Palace being linked with all sorts of names already.

No signings have been officially announced yet but there are plenty of names in the mix with the Eagles and to save you going through all those rubbish transfer websites and deleting all those pop-ups, we have collated them all into one place here. Let's crack on...

IN

Jack Wilshere

Let's just nip this one in the bud. It isn't going to happen. The 26-year-old Wilshere is out of contract this summer and looks set to leave Arsenal and has been heavily linked with a move to Palace.

Primarily due to having worked with - and played some of his best football under - Roy Hodgson with England.

But there are so many factors that make this transfer nowhere near as straight-forward as many Palace fans think it is.

He is reportedly demanding a £5m signing on fee and more wages than any other current Eagles player is on. He also has a chequered history of injuries and attitude problems.

All that adds up to a huge gamble and it just doesn't feel like Palace will roll the dice.

Chance of joining: 2/10

Jake Livermore

Probably more like it. The England international, who is on stand by for the World Cup this month, is very likely to leave West Brom after their relegation in May.

And Palace appear to be his destination with Roy Hodgson's men favourites to sign the 28-year-old midfielder, who also played for the Palace boss for the Three Lions; indeed he made his debut under Roy.

But according to the Mirror, the Baggies are reluctant to sell their star midfielder. Of course they are, but they have been relegated so they probably aren't in a hugely strong position.

Livermore is exactly the sort of signing you could see Hodgson making this summer. We make him highly likely to join.

Chance of joining: 8/10

Ryan Fredericks

The 25-year-old Fulham right-back had been monitored by Palace, with Sporting Director Dougie Freedman having watched him on numerous occasions.

He was a regular for the Cottagers in their promotion bid that ended with a playoff final win over Middlesbrough at Wembley last month.

My Fulham supporting work colleague reckons he isn't actually that good, a world away from superstar left-back Ryan Sessegnon.

But anyway, he signed for West Ham this week on a four-year deal and doesn't he look absolutely delighted to be there. NEXT!

Chance of joining: 0/10

Alban Lafont

Depending on what happens over the next few months Palace will either need zero keepers for next season or at least two.

Vicente Guaita has already signed for the Eagles on a free from Getafe but Atletico Madrid are sniffing about and there are reports of a £17m bid incoming.

It would be very Palace if we sold him without even arriving for pre-season training wouldn't it?

And this week his agent was talking up a move to Fiorentina for some reason! Uh oh!

Julian Speroni has also been offered a new deal, apparently, but hasn't agreed anything so could also leave this summer with his current deal having expired.

So maybe Palace will need 19-year-old Alban Lafont, who has been tracked by Premier League sides before, with Arsene Wenger a fan while he was at Arsenal.

Dutch side PSV Eindhoven also said to be interested in signing him and reports in France suggest that he is open to a move this summer, after three seasons in the first team with Ligue 1 club Toulouse.

"I think the time has come for me to see something else," Lafont is quoted as saying in French publication L'Equipe."I've had three seasons at TFC [Toulouse], three seasons where we fought to stay up. This season was mentally tough. I love my club and my supporters, the board, the managers and especially the president.

"However, I have a feeling of stagnation. I need to see something else to simply go up a level."

If he does move he really has nothing Toulouse does he? No YOU shut up!

Chance of joining: 5/10

Hiroki Sakai

So let's forget Fredericks and move onto another right-back; Marseille's Hiroki Sakai.

The Evening Standard is linking the 28-year-old Japanese international, who will be part of his country's squad for the World Cup this summer in Russia.

With no.1 right-back target Fredericks having signed for West Ham and Joel Ward's contract ending this month, Roy Hodgson wants a back-up for Aaron Wan-Bissaka who, let's face it, has that spot nailed down for next season.

According to the Evening Standard, Sakai has three years remaining on a £50,000-a-week deal at the French club and is thought to be happy there but it is believed they are willing to sanction his departure.

Sevilla have scouted the Japan star, while AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli are among Italian sides monitoring the situation although it's thought he prefers a move to England. Whatever happens, Palace might want to get this one sorted before the World Cup in case he has a blinder.

And if he does sign we'll have Sakho, Sako and Sakai, though, which in our view is more than enough reason to sign him.

Chance of joining: 7/10

OUT

Christian Benteke

The big potential exit from Selhurst this summer; it really hasn't been a great season for Christian Benteke.

He had a disastrous campaign where the goals just didn't flow and was disrupted twice by serious injuries.

Then the blows kept on coming after he was omitted from Robert Martinez's Belgium squad for the World Cup.

And he is the name most linked with a departure from Selhurst this summer and you can't blame the tabloids for this one. A striker who flopped last season seems like an easy target.

There are reports Hodgson isn't a fan but if Palace really do want to sell Benteke they will need to find a buyer willing to pay at least the £28m they recouped on him as any replacement of equal quality is likely to cost the same if not more.

His agent Eris Kismet has done nothing to cool the rumours either. “I know Besiktas are interested in Benteke," he said this week.

"I know Fikret Orman (Besiktas president) in person, he’s a great guy and he has told me he is interested in Benteke.  "But his price may be out of range. What I can say is that Crystal Palace won’t sell him for under 20 million euros.

"A loan? well that could be possible but contrary to reports I have not been contacted about one.”

Chances of leaving: 5/10

Yohan Cabaye

The other big name Palace player liked with a departure, Yo's contract runs out this month and he is yet to sign a new one.

He has long been linked with a move to Marseille where best mate Steve Mandanda is back at, and a return to France does appear on the cards soon, but theEagles are reportedly hoping he will stay at least one more year.

They have been in talks with the 32-year-old midfielder for a while about a new deal. Fellow Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne have also been offered the chance to sign Yohan, according to Yahoo Sport France.

But according to the report, at present the midfielder is out of reach financially for the team that finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season.

Could he leave? Yes definitely? Will he? Maybe.

Chances of leaving: 6/10

WIlf Zaha

Don't listen to all the rumours, it's simply agent talk.

There are so many factors against why Wilf would leave Palace. He is on mega bucks here, plays every week and lives close to his family. He wouldn't get all of that at any of the Big 6.

The latest rumour is a link to Tottenham for £70m but that is still way below what Palace value him at and would even consider accepting.

Until they get above £100m I wouldn't worry.

Chances of leaving: 0/10

Andros Townsend

Linked with a move to Leicester but let's face it, never going to happen.

Chances of leaving: 0/10

Bakary Sako

According to the bookies, newly promoted Wolves are favourites to sign Bakary Sako back. The Malian's contract is up this summer so it's a fair possibility he could leave.

But then he is on a fair whack at Selhurst so it would take a decent offer from whoever wants him, although he would also come on a free as, like Yohan, his contract is up this summer.

A return to Wolves where he made a name for himself in English football, could be romantic but his six goals last season for Palace before that injury in February showed he does have something to offer.

Chances of leaving: 7/10

FYP's FOIA Requests to the Sussex Police - An Update

Written by Jim Daly

Today the Palace Supporters Trust have published the letter of complaint which their solicitors have sent to the Sussex Police about the policing at the league match in November against Brighton at the Amex.

That letter referenced our Freedom of Information request, so we thought we’d post a brief update on what has happened since November 2017 for those of you that are interested.

As you might all recall, back in November 2017 we submitted various Freedom of Information Act requests to the Sussex Police about their allegation that Palace fans had been carrying knives and knuckle-dusters at the league match against Brighton at the Amex.

After those requests were submitted the Police admitted that they had been incorrect in saying that Palace fans had been in possession of weapons and issued an apology.

The Sussex Police didn’t, however, explain why a senior officer had come to put information about knives and knuckledusters into the public domain or why the Sussex Police had stated that Palace fans had been at the match without tickets. So we didn’t withdraw our first Freedom of Information request and made a further request dealing with the allegation about Palace fans at the match not having tickets.

On 12 February 2018, we received a response from the Sussex Police. Unfortunately, the Sussex Police didn’t provide the explanation of their failings and the information we were expecting.

Instead they simply said that disclosure of the information was not in the public interest as it could prejudice future investigations. That letter can be read at the below link:

[LINK]

We responded to the Sussex Police on 27 February 2018 setting out why we thought they should explain themselves. That letter contains some legal argument but various points about the public interest in providing the information from paragraphs 41 onwards. The letter can be read in full at the below link:

At the time of this article we have still received no response to our letter of 27 February. We will update you as and when we do.

Win a copy of Vince Hilaire's brilliant book - find out how here

Written by FYP Fanzine

Palace legnd Vince Hilaire has released an autobiography and you just know it's going to be good. (It is, btw!)

And at FYP we have three copies to give away to our followers- and all you have to do is listen to FYP Podcast 250 to find out how you can win a copy.

One of the most exciting footballers of his era, Vince Hilaire is a cult sporting figure. His career spanned over 600 games and included spells at Crystal Palace, Portsmouth, Leeds United and Stoke City, playing in every professional division.

Vince shared a dressing room with some of football’s biggest stars of the time, including Kenny Sansom, Mick Channon, Gordon Strachan and Vinnie Jones, and was managed by some of the biggest names in British football. This book offers a fascinating insight into the methods of these managers, such as Malcolm Allison’s and Terry Venables’s desperation to produce a side that rivalled the free-flowing football of the famous ‘Busby Babes’, and the contrasting rigidity of Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds.

A trailblazer in the professional game, Vince outlines the difficulties he faced as a young black player making his way in football in the 1970s, and the dread he felt playing at certain grounds.

Candidly detailing Vince’s journey into and out of professional football, this hugely entertaining autobiography tells the story of the beautiful game as it used to be played.

One of the first black footballers to come to prominence in the 1970s, Vince Hilaire has enjoyed a career spanning over 600 games, most notably for Crystal Palace, Portsmouth and Leeds United. Capped by England at Youth and Under-21 level, he was unlucky not to receive full international honours. Managed by some of the most famous names in English football, including Venables, Allison, Ball and Wilkinson, Vince was recently awarded a place in Portsmouth FC’s Hall of Fame.

Tom Maslona currently teaches English at one of London’s highest-achieving schools. He is a long-standing Crystal Palace supporter and has contributed to a number of Palace’s publications in the past, along with other sports magazines such as When Saturday Comes.

Some reviews...

A funny, emotive, and brutally honest insight into a cult figure at clubs from Palace to Pompey - Dominic Fifield, The Guardian.

I idolised Vinny. When the Daily Mail wrote a story in 1981 saying Vince was on the verge of leaving Palace for Arsenal, I told my parents: ‘If Vinny goes, I go.’ That was the admiration I had for him - Neil Ashton, chief football writer at The Sun and host of Sky’s Sunday Supplement.

The book is out now priced £12.99 and can be bought at Biteback Publishing here and Amazon.

Simply listen to FYP Podcast 250 to find out how you can win a copy of Vince's brilliant book.

Steve Parish opens up about Crystal Palace transfers plans in January

Written by Jim Daly

You probably won't have failed to notice that Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish joined us on the FYP Podcast this week to chat all manner of things.

Alongside Steve Browett, who explained what his reduced role is these days at the club, Parish talked candidly about transfers, the stadium plans, Roy Hodgson and lots more.

You can listen to the 1hr45min interview with the Eagles chief here but we've also cobbled together some of the best bits below.

On players leaving this month

"I think there are probably one or two who aren't featuring as much as they'd hoped with the first team.

"You don't always know. You get bids and they might be attractive to the manager which makes sense in terms of the other things we can do.

"You can't stop people making a bid for your players and you can only really look at it when they do.

"I think we're tight in the wage bill, so it certainly wouldn't hurt [for some to go]. In terms of the plans we've got, we should be OK.

“We’ve [the board] got our wallets out. I’ve got partners, we’ve committed again funds for this transfer window.

“We have spent £70million in the last two windows and got £2m back in. People can say we haven’t been wise, it could’ve been better but I look at most of the buys and they have done a good job.

“The odd one or two hasn’t worked out but they are human assets. They can have problems in life that affect them. Pape [Souare] had a bad injury which forced the situation [to sign left-backs] last January."

On buying a new striker

"The striker thing is well documented, but the striker market is unbelievably difficult. Everybody is out there looking for one. It isn't the force of your will that gets these things done, and we have to bring the right characters as well.

"It isn't as easy as me saying 'oh, I'll have him'."This manager we've got has got a very specific idea of what he wants, and so he should have. That gives us comfort.

"It's all good finding the players but you have what we call opportunities. There are players you have to get out of clubs who want to come.

"We have got one or two situations at the moment which are looking good."

On Loftus-Cheek and Fosu-Mensah's futures at Palace

“I don't think the clubs would want that [for their players to return early].

“I think the clubs sent them to us knowing it's a two-way street, we get a good player and we develop them.

“They should be very happy with what's happened to those players, the game time they've got, the coaching they’ve got.

“It's all very well playing in training and playing in Under-23 games but Roy [Hodgson] teaches players how to win football matches in the Premier League which is an invaluable skill.”

On waiting until late in the window to do deals

"Fortunately because the manager has done such an outstanding job – along with the players – we have got a bit of breathing space. But we’re not complacent.

“If there has been one criticism which has been well-founded – if it is my fault or the managers I don’t know – we’ve had our hand forced too often in the time we have been in this league. We need to stop doing that and create architect situations where we’re making the best decisions for the football club on a number of things.

“I’ve got two fantastic ingredients for that – Roy and Dougie. It’s the best transfer environment I’ve worked in at the club.

“Dougie has got such a great work ethic, boundless enthusiasm and opinion – he doesn’t sit on the fence.

“You’ve got to find people who will start ahead of those people. Everyone is looking for first-teamers in January. If we’re sitting in our boardroom then Swansea and Southampton will be talking about the same players in many respects.

"People know about the odd player we're linked to, and you pretty much get offered every player.

"So pretty much when anyone scores against us I am slightly sort of beating myself up about it.

"The margins between success and failure are so tiny, and the difference between the players you look at are so small.

"All we can do in football is make the best decision at every turn of the corner. And we've got to remember as well we're competing against smart people."

On his legacy at Palace

"People who run football clubs are smart. Most of them have had their own business and been successful.

"I think you have to just do the best you can sometimes, and if that makes you look smart then great, and if it makes you look stupid you have to get through that.

"In the end I hope I get judged overall. You'd be surprised how quickly you get judged.

"I remember Jose Mourinho talking at Manchester United when he was going through difficulty, and people were talking to him like he was useless.

"And he was saying he hasn't become a bad manager overnight and have people forgotten all the titles he's won?

"At a micro level, I felt like that when people thought I didn't know what I was doing. We're going to make mistakes over time.

"It's like [you're not allowed to] run any business without making the odd mistake."
